According to central bank statistics, the Bank of Japan purchased 70.1 billion yen ($470.31 million) in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on Wednesday, entering the market after Japanese equities fell on a rise in US Treasury rates.

On Wednesday, the Topix index finished 2.5 percent down at 2,218.89, over the 2% level that often leads the central bank to intervene in the market.

This is the third time this year that the central bank has purchased ETFs to bolster the market. The previous occurrence occurred on consecutive days from March 14 to March 15, when markets plummeted following the failure of Silicon Valley Bank.
