Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META), reported on Friday that the company’s brand-new Threads app, which some are calling the “Twitter killer,” had already racked up 70 million signups since its midnight launch on Wednesday, largely because of its enormous Instagram user base.

According to a letter from Twitter lawyer Alex Spiro that Semafor got, Twitter threatened to sue Meta in response to the launch a day earlier. The letter alleges that Meta tried to create a “copycat” app by forcibly hiring numerous ex-Twitter employees, giving them the task of developing the Threads app with the intention of utilizing Twitter’s trade secrets and intellectual property to hasten the app’s creation. The letter asks that Meta stop using that information right away. Meta, via its communications director Andy Stone, announced on the new app that none of the Threads team members had previously worked for Twitter. “Competition is fine, but cheating is not,” tweeted Elon Musk.
