Global Illumination was established in New York in 2021 by entrepreneurs Thomas Dimson, Taylor Gordon, and Joey Flynn, all of whom had prior positions at Instagram, a division of Meta (META). According to his own website, among their many accomplishments, Dimson is credited with helping to write the initial code for Instagram’s content ranking algorithms. Following the acquisition, the whole Global Illumination team will merge with OpenAI and concentrate on core projects.
