The FDA issued a warning letter to Amazon.com for selling seven unapproved eye drops on its e-commerce platform. According to the FDA, Amazon was promoting eye drops that were not recognized as safe and effective for providing temporary relief from symptoms such as excessive watery discharge, redness, burning, or pink eye.
The FDA recently advised consumers to avoid using 26 over-the-counter eye drop products due to potential infection risks and instances of vision loss. The FDA stated that eye products in general pose a greater risk of harm to consumers because they circumvent certain natural body defenses.
Earlier this year, the FDA issued similar warnings to eight companies, including two major pharmacy chains, advising them not to manufacture or promote specific unauthorized eye products.
Nonetheless, Similasan, a privately held Swiss pharmaceutical company, had previously received FDA advice to adhere to safety limits for diethylene glycol or ethylene glycol, which are common contaminants in some medications and can cause fatal poisoning at high levels.
