During the Lex Fridman podcast, Zuckerberg and the widely recognized computer scientist held a substantial virtual conversation for a full hour. Remarkably, this exchange occurred solely in the digital sphere, devoid of any physical presence.
The entire conversation was carried out in the metaverse using extraordinarily lifelike avatars powered by Meta’s Quest 3 headsets and noise-cancelling headphones.
Surprisingly, social media users, even those from Crypto Twitter, appeared to be truly astonished by the intricacy of the system.
Fridman also conveyed his immediate impressions of the situation, underscoring the striking feeling of closeness he had with Zuckerberg’s avatar during the interview. Shortly after, he remarked on the challenge of distinguishing between Zuckerberg’s virtual representation and his physical presence.
The technology on display is the most recent advancement of Codec Avatars. Initially revealed in 2019, Codec Avatars is one of Meta’s long-standing research projects, with the goal of crafting fully authentic real-time avatars through headsets that incorporate facial tracking sensors.
Still, it might take a while for users to craft authentic avatars. As per Zuckerberg, this technology relies on high-priced machine learning algorithms and thorough head scans conducted using sophisticated equipment that boasts over 100 distinct cameras.
Yet, Zuckerberg conveyed Meta’s determination to decrease these hurdles as much as feasible. He hinted at the possibility that, in the future, such scans might be achievable using an ordinary smartphone.
